Sioux Falls Hospice Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers with clerical skills can serve a hospice center by helping with simple administrative duties. These duties include writing sympathy cards, helping with mailings and performing data entry.

Integrative health volunteers provide relaxing and anxiety-reducing therapies toward the end of life. These therapies include Reiki, Healing Touch or aromatherapy. Volunteers in this position must be licensed.

Help preserve a patient’s legacy. Legacy volunteers will help capture memories that can be shared for generations. They make several trips to visit with patients and facilitate creative endeavors to document patient legacies.

If you’re currently licensed in massage therapy, you can volunteer with us to provide therapeutic massages to hospice patients.

Music helps reduce stress and anxiety while connecting patients to their favorite memories. Share your talents either through song or musical instruments to help enhance patient quality of life.

Provide companionship and bring smiles to the faces of our patients as a patient visitor volunteer. You’ll visit hospice patients in their private residence, assisted living facility, nursing home or at our hospice houses in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Worthington, Minnesota. Volunteers perform a variety of activities to help bring meaning and happiness to patients in their end stages of life. You can play games or cards, provide hand massages, help with simple chores, read out loud, watch movies and more to care for patients. We will try to match volunteers and patients so the time spent is valuable for both. Companions do not do personal care or administer medications.

Sanford Hospice needs volunteers with a passion for photography to capture portraits of our hospice patients and their families. Volunteers will also be asked to attend special events, such as a veteran pinning ceremony, to provide patients with photos to document the day. These portraits and photos are a treasured gift to a hospice patient’s family. All volunteers must have their own equipment.

Respite volunteers give families and caregivers a chance to take care of necessary errands and get away from the house knowing someone is there to stay with their loved one. Family members appreciate visits from a compassionate friend who understands what they are going through. Respite volunteers might also be called to help families and caregivers with shopping, household maintenance or other chores.

Chaplain volunteers provide spiritual care for patients, visitors and staff at our hospice centers. These volunteers play a vital role in helping patients and their families through difficult times, regardless of an individual’s faith background or belief system.

Chaplain volunteer responsibilities:

• Providing religious support for individuals who feel fearful, depressed or anxious
• Helping people find a sense of hope, meaning or purpose
• Active listening to patients, visitors and staff
• Aiding prayer and other religious rituals
• Providing religious materials and resources

We’re looking for veterans who would like to visit our veteran hospice patients. Many veterans receiving hospice care appreciate connecting with other veterans even if they served in a different time or place. Sanford Hospice is part of the We Honor Veterans Program.
