To the tune of 205,000 square feet, Sanford Health continues to expand its orthopedic care skyward.
On June 7, leaders at Sanford Health ceremoniously dug dirt at the site of a new orthopedic hospital. It will be the tallest building on the health system’s main campus in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
More room for patients, medical students
The new hospital will rise between Sanford Children’s Hospital and the surgical tower using a 208-foot crane, the tallest ever used on a Sanford Health site.
Sanford Orthopedic Hospital will feature:
- 161,000 square feet of new space
- 44,000 square feet of remodeled space
- 19 inpatient rooms
- 12 operating rooms
- 56 medical suite rooms
- New intraoperative MRI machine, providing near real-time imaging during procedures
- New home of the orthopedic residency program

“We’re now almost in our fourth year of our orthopedics and sports medicine residency program, and this building is going to make that program even more competitive,” he said.
Dr. Kimber said the new hospital’s medical suites will be “hotel-type rooms for families” and will make a difference in patients’ healing process.

The added room will help bring more providers to the rural region to care for more patients regardless of their ZIP codes, according to Paul Hanson, president of Sanford Health in Sioux Falls.
“We can expand our services with recruitment efforts into communities that maybe we don’t have a strong presence in today, but we will tomorrow,” he said with a smile.
Investing in rural health care
Joshua Crabtree, M.D., vice president of Sanford Clinic in Sioux Falls, said the decision to build the orthopedic hospital was made with patients’ best interests in mind.
“Our patients are going to be impacted by the advances in technology, the advances in instrumentation and advances in technique. We’re committed to taking care of people.
“When we put a building like this in place and we make a commitment like this, it really solidifies our intention to be the premier rural health care provider in the country. We are part of the community, and we will always be part of this community,” said Dr. Crabtree.
The orthopedic hospital’s anticipated opening date is fall of 2025.
