Faculty

Sanford Research is the research arm of Sanford Health, one of the largest rural integrated health care systems in the nation. This makes Sanford Research uniquely structured to facilitate basic, translational, clinical, and population health research across the upper midwest and the entire Sanford Health network.

Postdoctoral Fellowships

Sanford Research provides a robust career and professional development program for postdoctoral fellows and staff scientists to help them prepare for a variety of scientific careers. In addition to our accomplished faculty mentors and state-of-the-art resources, professional training opportunities include the following:

  • Our Career Path Workshop Series allows postdocs and staff scientists to explore a variety of science careers; topics have included biotech industry, pharmaceutical industry, undergraduate teaching, clinical lab directing, science policy, tech transfer and public health
  • Professional development presentations provide tips and instruction in a variety of topics, including grant writing, oral presentations, networking and preparing for faculty interviews
  • Hands-on workshops and programs enable postdocs and staff scientists to develop and hone professional skills like writing and reviewing grants and giving oral presentations, chalk talks and elevator pitches

Sanford Research invites applications for full time faculty at the rank of Assistant Scientist within Sanford Research in Sioux Falls, SD, with commensurate rank of Assistant Professor in the Sanford School of Medicine at The University of South Dakota. Sanford Research is the non-profit research branch under Sanford Health.

We seek outstanding scientists with research programs that focus on healthcare delivery and/or population health research in areas including areas such as healthcare IT, healthcare economics, and evidence-based practices an intervention. Successful candidates will build upon, enhance, and complement our existing infrastructure in accessing and utilizinghealthcare data, a common data model, andbehavioral economics.

Qualifications

Assistant Scientist, Rare Disease Research
Sanford Research invites applications for full-time faculty at the rank of assistant scientist within Sanford Research in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with commensurate rank of assistant professor at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine.

We seek outstanding scientists with research programs that span areas of biomedical research impacting rare diseases. This could include, but is not limited to, understanding the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms of rare diseases, using animal models to understand disease progression and design therapeutic interventions, and developing new therapeutic approaches to treat rare diseases. Significant institutional support, including modern laboratory space and state-of-the-art facilities will be provided. A comprehensive benefits package will be tailored to the candidate’s qualifications. Successful candidates will join a collaborative team with a well-established infrastructure in rare disease research and faculty mentorship. In addition, successful candidates will have to opportunity to partner with the Coordination of Rare Diseases at Sanford (CoRDS) international rare disease patient registry whose mission is to facilitate the advancement of rare disease research.

Assistant/Associate/Full Biostatistics Faculty

The Sanford Center for Bio-Behavioral Research (SCBR) of Sanford Research, in Fargo, ND invites applications for a Biostatistician with a faculty-level appointment commensurate with experience. This faculty member will also serve as the Director of the Biomedical Statistics Division at SCBR. Candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  1. Hold a doctoral degree in statistics; or a field of behavioral research (e.g., psychology, neuroscience) with a strong statistical background
  2. Have at least two years of experience and/or a postdoctoral fellowship with a strong record of collaborative research. Preference will be given to applicants with:
    1. Training and research expertise in a broad range of statistical techniques applicable to clinical samples
    2. A strong publication record of peer-reviewed articles
    3. A documented track record of success in obtaining extramural funding and/or current funding as principal investigator or statistician on funded projects
    4. A demonstrated history of strong research collaboration
    5. Experience with eating disorder or obesity-related research
    6. Possess good interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate statistical analyses, methods, and findings

The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate and work with research scientists on grant applications, ongoing grants, data sets, publications, and presentations and he/she may have a research program of his/her own as well. Title and highly competitive salary will be provided commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The current position will serve in the Sanford Center for Biobehavioral Research (CBR). CBR is comprised of three divisions: Behavioral, Biomedical, and Biomedical Statistics. These three divisions primarily work in the areas of eating disorders, obesity, and bariatric surgery.

Staff Scientist/Postdoctoral Fellowship – Weimer Lab

Staff Scientist/Postdoctoral Fellowship – Weimer Lab
The Weimer Lab at Sanford Research is looking for a talented postdoctoral fellow or Staff Scientist to join their team. Research in the Weimer Lab focuses on understanding the processes that drive development of the cerebral cortex and how disruption in these processes contribute to a number of neuropediatric diseases. Within the Weimer team, this candidate would work with our Batten disease research team conducting preclinical studies screening for effective treatments for this rare pediatric disorder. Responsibilities may include work on identifying candidate therapeutics, implementing assays for rapid drug screening, developing and validating models of disease (including patient derived cell lines, rodent models, and large animal models) and in vivo screening of lead drug candidates.

Qualifications

Post-Doctoral Fellow Warnhoff Lab

The Warnhoff Lab in the Pediatrics and Rare Diseases Group at Sanford Research has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the pathology of molybdenum cofactor deficiency- a rare and devastating genetic disease. This research will be carried out using the model organismCaenorhabditis elegans, and will leverage the Warnhoff Lab’s expertise in genetic screens, whole-genome sequencing, CRISPR/Cas technology, fluorescent imaging, and molecular biology.

Postdoctoral Fellow - Bustos Lab

The Bustos Lab in the Pediatrics and Rare Diseases Group at Sanford Research has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to investigate ubiquitin related signaling pathways that are disrupted in intellectual disabilities. This research will be carried out by using cutting-edge technologies to study signal transduction using pluripotent stem cells as a developmental model.

Qualifications:The ideal candidate will have PhD in Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or related discipline and experience in cell culture and molecular biology. Prior experience in stem cell biology or protein biochemistry and a publication record in international peer-reviewed journals are desirable. Postdoctoral Fellow – de la Puente Lab

Postdoctoral position in the De la Puente Lab in the Cancer Biology and Immunotherapies Group is available at Sanford Research, Sioux Falls, SD. Interested candidate is expected to have recently obtained PhD and a strong track record of publications in Cancer and/or Immunology. The main job duty is to perform research to understand the role of tumor microenvironment components (extracellular matrix, stroma, and signaling) in cancer immune evasion so as to identify novel therapeutic targets by using patient-derived 3D cultures. The translational research project leverages multi-disciplinary approach in cancer biology, immunology, biomedical engineering/tissue engineering, OMICs, and high-throughputin vitropatient-derived models to probe complex biological processes and to pursue new therapeutic opportunities for ovarian cancer.

Postdoctoral Fellow/Staff Scientist – Savinov Lab
A position at the level of Postdoctoral Fellow or Staff Scientist is available in the lab of Dr. Alexei Savinov for a motivated and ambitious candidate with a strong background in Immunology and Molecular biology. Projects in the lab are focused on identifying cellular and molecular mechanisms leading to type 1 diabetes that are suitable for intervention, developing corresponding therapeutic approaches, and rigorous preclinical testing of these approaches.

Qualifications
Doctoral degree in molecular or cell biology, immunology, cancer biology, or a related field is required. Previous documented research experience with molecular cloning and Flow Cytometry is essential. A strong publication record along with advanced experience with primary cell culture, immunological techniques (such as ELISA, ELISPOT, Luminex, or manipulations of immune cells), and/or multi-color flow cytometry, is preferred. Familiarity with generating/characterizing mouse models, retroviral transduction, and immunofluorescent microscopy is highly desirable.
